Weekend with Wisdom: Advaita Vedanta in a Modern Accent by Shri Arvind Sharma

The tradition of Advaita Vedanta, although classically formulated by Shankaracharya around the eighth century according to modern scholarship, is almost as old as Hinduism itself. However, although ancient, it has also tried to keep up with the times and its spokespersons have not failed to engage with contemporary developments. Thus Shankaracharya responded to the challenge posed by Buddhism and Jainism in his times, Madhavacharya Vidyaranya responded to the challenge posed by Islam and Muslim rule in India in the fourteenth century, and Swami Vivekananda to the challenge posed by Christianity and British/Christian rule in the nineteenth century.

In this talk Shri Arvind Sharma will try to engage with some contemporary issues in the same spirit as a student of Advaita Vedanta.

Arvind Sharma, formerly of the I.A.S., is currently the Birks Professor of Comparative Religion at McGill University in Montréal, Canada, where he has taught for the past thirty years. He had published extensively in the fields of comparative religion and Indian religions, as well as several books on Advaita Vedanta.
